To Fly is to Fall

On a rooftop above the city
Only can look up to the sun
Brightest blues surrounding me
Fingertips brushing the clouds

I want to capture this moment for you
            with you

The feather of a wing tickles my arm
A bluebird lands on the ledge
Daring me to sit with her

Tentative steps towards the edge
Displaying more fear than the bird
My feet dangle over the side

Freedom follows fear

When the bird leaps from the ledge
My heart drops further than she
Spreads her wings before the crash
            and flies
                        daring me to follow

My arms cannot hold my weight
My bones are not hollow
My skin cannot act as feathers

If I fall
I may not fly

Still, she lures me further off the edge
Promising excitement and liberation
She does not guarantee a soft landing
Or the absence of a crash

She simply displays the thrill of falling

While I do not leap from the building
I hold a blue feather in my fingers
And call you
Promise to pick you up on my way home
